One of the biggest problems in cycling is choosing the correct saddle. Surveys show that 80% of all cyclists suffer from problems caused by sitting. Starting with pressure points, the complaints range from abscesses and numbness all the way to impotence.

The industry is trying to tackle this problem with a multitude of different designs and materials. Elaborate padding with gel cushions are too heavy for athletic cyclists and convey the feeling of sitting in a chair while riding. Soft foam rubber padding provides a comfortable effect at first but in the long run, sinking into the cushioning leads to pressure points. Cut-outs in the perineal area reduce the seat area and cause pressure points in the area of the edges. Even taking the distance of the pelvic bone into account when selecting a saddle does not sufficiently solve the problem because the measurement is often made in an upright, i.e. other sitting position than while bicycle riding.

The difference in height between the balls in the area of the sit bones and the perineal area shows that mass-produced saddles cannot always do justice to the cyclist’s anatomy.

Principle of the Comfort Line custom made saddle:

This patented procedure enables displaying the cyclist’s anatomy in accordance with the sitting position by making an imprint and converting it into foamed plastic. This impression technique follows the principle of functional impressions in medical engineering. In the process, sections of the body are formed in function. The imprint is made on one’s own bicycle while in movement for a specific period of time and results in an authentic image of the respective shape of the body. As a cushioning of the seat area would falsify the imprint, preferably thin trousers without back pockets should be worn when the imprint is made. The sit bones of the pelvic bone and the pressure sensitive soft tissues of the perineal area are determined during the imprint, the seat-contact surface is enlarged and pressure peaks are eliminated.

The density of the foamed plastic used in the production of the individual saddles is specifically adapted for this purpose and prevents a sinking into the cushioning and is at the same time extremely comfortable. Many foamed plastics are too soft, which results in the sit bones sinking into the seat shell through the padding, which leads to pain caused by pressure. At the same time, the compressed foamed plastic exerts pressure on the blood vessels and nerve tracts of the perineal area, which can cause numbness. Therefore, the combination of a full carbon saddle with individual padding results in a lightweight but nevertheless comfortable saddle.
